| Hyundai R380LC-9 Excavator gets to work |
|
Following on from the success of the Hyundai R320LC-9 Excavator, Thompsons Plant Hire is pleased to announce the purchase of that excavator’s big brother the Hyundai R380LC-9. “These are great machines,” explains Kevin “Like Hyundai cars they come fully loaded, with most things as standard. When you add on the 2 year 3,000 hour warranty, they provide a solid platform to grow the business.” No sooner was it delivered from Taylor & Braithwaite it was deployed to Stanton Quarry near Barrow-in-Furness, where its little brother was already hard at work. “It’s a big project. We need machines that are reliable and flexible, if we are to deliver on time for the client, and these excavators give us that” explained Simon, the Plant Manager That reliability will certainly be put to the test as the Hyundai’s along with the rest of Thompsons plant in the quarry, as they grade, move to a holding area, load onto wagons and delivering some 135,000 tons of rock to Barrow Docks, to be used offshore in the Walney Island Wind Farm Project. The stone is graded into two sizes, 250 x 700mm, which is used at the base of the turbines, and smaller 200 x 50mm used to cover the cables transferring the power back to the mainland. By the time this phase of the project will be completed Thompsons will have moved 65,000 tons of the larger stone and 70,000 tons of the smaller one. To put that in to some kind of perspective, the wagons that transfer the stone to the docks hold approximately 20 tons, to move all the rock in this phase will take approximately 8,150 wagon loads – that’s a lot of stone, to be delivered on schedule. But for Simon and the rest of the Thompsons team at the quarry it’s a challenge they relish and are confident the will meet. |
