Rock Armour at Workington Docks

Rock Armour at Workington Docks

On the 19th November 2009 the heavens quite literally opened and West Cumbria saw the heaviest rainfall in living memory. The towns of Keswick, Cockermouth and Workington all suffered from unprecedented flooding during the deluge.

Tragedy struck in Workington with the death of PC Bill Barker who died when the Northside Bridge collapsed as he was bravely trying to direct traffic away from the weakened crossing. The next day both the Calva Bridge and the rail crossing at Workington docks were deemed to be unsafe, and in due course the rail crossing was condemned.

Working in partnership under Kier Construction one of the UK’s leading construction companies, Thompsons Plant Hire were initially tasked with building a solid foundation in the tidal silt, to provide a firm base from which the heavy demolition equipment could be used safely to dismantle the condemned railway bridge.

New DAF-XF105 Joins the Fleet

DAF-XF105

Thompson Plant Hire continues to grow the Biomass Production side of the business with the purchase of a new DAF XF 105 truck, the flagship of the DAF range, and winner of the International Truck of the Year award in 2007.

“The ability to get our Morbark 4600XL Track Wood Hog, where it is needed is crucial and the new DAF gives us the added capability of having a 6 x 4 double drive.” explains Simon “Most trucks only have a single axel but the DAF XF 105 has two making it more robust which is essential when it comes to getting the Morbark on site, think of it like four wheel drive for a truck. A lot of the time we are working deep in forests, and with the sheer weight of the Morbark we need all the traction we can get.”

Hyundai R380LC-9 Excavator gets to work

Hyundai R320LC-9 Excavator

Following on from the success of the Hyundai R320LC-9 Excavator, Thompsons Plant Hire is pleased to announce the purchase of that excavator’s big brother the Hyundai R380LC-9.

“These are great machines,” explains Kevin “Like Hyundai cars they come fully loaded, with most things as standard. When you add on the 2 year 3,000 hour warranty, they provide a solid platform to grow the business.”

No sooner was it delivered from Taylor & Braithwaite it was deployed to Stanton Quarry near Barrow-in-Furness, where its little brother was already hard at work.

“It’s a big project. We need machines that are reliable and flexible, if we are to deliver on time for the client, and these excavators give us that” explained Simon, the Plant Manager

That reliability will certainly be put to the test as the Hyundai’s along with the rest of Thompsons plant in the quarry, as they grade, move to a holding area, load onto wagons and delivering some 135,000 tons of rock to Barrow Docks, to be used offshore in the Walney Island Wind Farm Project.

The stone is graded into two sizes, 250 x 700mm, which is used at the base of the turbines, and smaller 200 x 50mm used to cover the cables transferring the power back to the mainland. By the time this phase of the project will be completed Thompsons will have moved 65,000 tons of the larger stone and 70,000 tons of the smaller one.
